The zeitgeist for reboots and sequels doesn’t seem to end its haunting this year.
Showtime has just sent out a trailer for a new series, “American Gigolo.” It is a sequel to the hit 1980 film starring Richard Gere.
Prolific actor Jon Bernthal (“The Walking Dead”, “King Richard”) will fill Gere’s very sexy shoes and designer costumes as the title character, Julian Kaye, who while working as a prostitute been implicated in a murder. As entertainment tonight reported, this new series begins 15 years after Kaye was charged with murder and sent to prison.
As seen in the dark and sultry trailer, Kaye is released from jail – by a cop played by Rosie O’Donnell – and is determined to find out who set him up. He must then readjust to life in Los Angeles, getting back into sex work while trying to reconnect with his old flame, played by Gretchen Mol.
It quickly seems that similar issues followed Kaye upon his release from prison.
“American Gigolo” also stars Wayne Brady, Lizzie Brocheré, Leland Orser and Laura Liguori.
“Call Me” – which was the theme song to the original “American Gigolo” movie – became a massive hit for legendary new wave band Blondie. This new trailer features a haunting new remix of the song.
In a bit of synergy, Blondie is on tour this summer with legendary British punk band The Damned.
“American Gigolo” premieres Sept. 9 on Showtime.
