DEF LEPPARD’s PHIL COLLEN Says New Rock Bands Lack “Star Power”

In a new interview with Then listen!, Phil Collen we asked which artist(s) DEF LEPPARD “will hand over to” once he and his comrades decide to retire. He replied (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “I don’t know. I’m still waiting, actually. You hear a lot out there, but it’s rare.

“There’s a problem, I think, and I think that’s the ICT Tac and Youtube crowd.

“When bands or artists wrote before, it was because they wanted an artist and wanted to express themselves and write songs and share them and say, ‘Wow. Check this out’, as opposed to ‘Wow. Look “me. Please love me,” he continued. “I don’t want to sound like an old dude, but that’s what I noticed. And I’m still waiting for someone like Prince Where [LED] ZEPPELIN or something that has a little more something. There are very few things.

METALLICthat’s great ; when you see them, there is a big difference”, Phil said. “GUNS N’ ROSES are awesome. I no longer see that; I don’t see that star power. I don’t see that sort of thing. So that’s what I’m waiting for. There was none of that. NIRVANA was… Of course, FOO FIGHTERS is an offshoot of NIRVANA. And I like it FOO FIGHTERS; I think they are awesome. But when NIRVANA came out, I was, like, ‘Woah, that’s amazing.’ The SEX GUNS – surprising. But I’m waiting, I’m still waiting.”

When the interviewer notices that the rock scene lacks future festival headliners, Phil said: “That question comes up a bit. People say, ‘What about that? And I don’t hear anything. I hear derivative stuff and stuff that isn’t inspired. You want to be inspired. So, yes, I’m still waiting. It’s like in all genres of music. In hip-hop, it’s the same thing. You wait to hear… Or R&B. You listen to old R&B — you listen Stevie Wonderyou listen Marvin Gaye and stuff like that – nothing is like that anymore and that kind of soul and vibe and stuff. I think we’ve kind of comfortably moved into something else that doesn’t really require that kind of excellence. It’s rare that this kind of talent comes along.”
