New American Pie movie on the way will be a “new take”

A new American pie the film is in the works – and it promises to be a “new take” in Universal’s long-running sex comedy franchise.


According The Hollywood Reporteractor and filmmaker Sujata Day (Insecure, definition please) is attached to write a new entry in the American pie franchise for Universal 1440 Entertainment, a division of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. The new film’s story is based on Day’s own original pitch and is described as being a “new take” on American pie. That said, plot details are being kept under wraps for now.

As an actor, Day is perhaps best known for her role as Sarah on the HBO series Insecurehaving already participated in the web series of Issa Rae The misadventures of a clumsy black girl. As a filmmaker, Day made her directorial debut with 2020 definition pleasewhich she also wrote and performed. In the film, Day portrays Monica Chowdry, a former spelling champion who is forced to reconcile with her estranged brother as the two care for their sick mother.


This time at Band Camp…

Not to be confused with Don McLean’s 1971 song of the same name, Universal’s American pie was written by Adam Herz and directed by Paul Weitz in the latter’s directorial debut. The film was originally released in theaters in 1999, starring Jason Biggs (Orange is the new black), Chris Klein (the flash), Sean William Scott (Final destination), Alyson Hanigan (buffy the vampire slayer, how I Met Your Mother), Eugene Lévy (Schitt’s Creek) and John Cho (star trek, Harold and Kumar), among many others – not to mention an appearance by pop-punk trio Blink-182.

Three additional films in the main American pie series then released in theaters. Written by Herz and directed by James B. Rogers, american pie 2 on the big screen in 2001. American wedding followed suit in 2003, with Herz once again returning as writer and Jesse Dylan taking over as director. More recently, American meeting released theatrically in 2012 from the writer-director duo of Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Cobra Kai).

There is also a direct video series American pie spin-off films, titled American Pie presents. American Pie Presents: Band Camp originally released on DVD in 2005, followed by American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile in 2006, American Pie Presents: Beta House in 2007, American Pie Presents: The Book of Love in 2009 and, more recently, American Pie Presents: Girl Rules in 2020.
